Weekend – La Varietรฉ (1982) Cherry Red Remaster & Expanded version 2006 320๐Ÿ˜Ž

Weekend were a Welsh band formed by Alison Statton in 1981, following the split of Young Marble Giants. The band was a merger between two projects. Statton began writing with Spike of Z Block Records and Reptile Ranch in Cardiff, Wales in the summer of 1981, before moving to London where she teamed up with Simon Emmerson (at that time using the name Simon Booth) of Methodishca Tune. The band signed to Rough Trade Records in December 1981, but recorded only one studio album, La Variete.

La Variete was released in 1982 on the Rough Trade label and made it to no. 4 in the UK Indie Chart staying there for 15 weeks. It was revered by critics on release as a bold new departure from the prevailing post-punk ethos, and served as a major influence on Saint Etienne, the Sundays, Belle and Sebastian and many others.

According to Cherry Red, La Variete is: "A beautifully realised and delicate collection of songs set against a jazz backdrop, it switches across myriad musical settings including samba, cabaret, Afrobeat and highly personal, confessional pop."

After splitting up in 1983, members Simon Booth and Larry Stabbins formed the more jazz orientated Working Week. The other members later reunited as a duo under the name "Alison Statton and Spike", issuing the albums Tidal Blues (1994), The Shady Tree (1997) and Bimini Twist (2018).

1989 - Loreena McKennitt - Parallel Dreams

1989 - Loreena McKennitt - Parallel Dreams (Flac)

Parallel Dreams, the Canadian harpist/songwriter's quietly moving sophomore release, finds the mystical red-haired siren in true balladeer form. By far McKennitt's most romantic venture -- the liner notes describe the project's central theme as a "yearning toward love, liberty and integration" -- Dreams is more ambitious than her sparse, impeccably recorded debut, Elemental, tripling the amount of players and laying the groundwork for the immense scope she would go on to attain on future recordings. The heartbreaking trio of "Standing Stones," "Annachnie Gordon," and "Dickens' Dublin" -- the latter features an effective radio-show sample of an unnamed Irish school child detailing the birth of Christ -- stand among the artist's finest works, and the range and clarity of her voice is undeniably powerful. Parallel Dreams was an emotional and career-turning point for McKennitt, as her next recording would be the major-label spectacle The Visit. (AllMusic)

Oysterband – Granite Years (Best Of... 1986 To '97) (2000) 320

* Oysterband (originally The Oyster Band) is a British folk rock and folk punk band formed in Canterbury around 1976.

The band formed in parallel to Fiddler's Dram, and under the name "Oyster Ceilidh Band" played purely as a dance band at first. The name Oyster comes from the group's early association with the coastal town of Whitstable in East Kent, known for the quality of its oysters. Their first album, released under the Oyster Ceilidh Band name, was Jack's Alive (1980) on the Dingles record label. Subsequent albums, as "Oyster Band" (sometimes "The Oyster Band") were released on the band's own Pukka Music label: English Rock 'n' Roll: The Early Years 1800–1850 and Lie Back and Think of England, followed by Liberty Hall and 20 Golden Tie-Slackeners. *

2023 - Asake - Mr. Money With The Vibe

2023 - Asake - Mr. Money With The Vibe @320

Asake became one of Nigeria’s biggest breakout stars in the early 2020s, thanks to a street-pop sound that mixes up snatches of local styles with big, bold hooks and vivid dispatches of life in Lagos. Mr. Money With the Vibe became the highest-charting Nigerian debut on the Billboard 200, and for good reason: Long on pleasure and presence, it offers everything from a Burna Boy cameo (the remix of “Sungba”) to hypnotically grooving burners (“Joha”) to incantatory slow ones (“Dull,” about refusing to be) and never lets up. It all adds up to a debut you shouldn’t miss. —C.H.
