The Apostles – The Singles & Compilation Album Tracks 2018 320

The Apostles were an experimental post-punk band who developed within the confines of the 1980s Anarcho Punk scene in the UK, but did not necessarily adhere to the aesthetics of that movement.

Although the core of the group remained stable, Andy Martin and Dave Fanning were joined by various members over their 10 year span. Variation was also key in music styles as they varied from pop to punk to industrial through to pure experimentation, with influences like The Velvet Underground, The Adverts, Alternative TV, Lemon Kittens, The Pop Group and Twelve Cubic Feet cited.

Although highly critical of the seemingly inward looking anarchist movement of the times, the autonomous and libertarian approach of The Apostles seemed to portray classic anarchism, as opposed to the conformity of many of their contemporaries. This led to much respect from notable members of the original anarcho-punk movement such as Crass with whom the band co-operated during the squatting of the Zig-Zag Club and running of The Autonomy Centre and Centro Iberico venues, and Conflict who released a single and album by The Apostles on their Mortarhate label.

Originally formed in 1980 by William Corbett, Julian Portinari, Dan MacIntyre and Pete Bynghall, the band came into its own when Andy Martin joined to contribute lead vocals and lyrics. Shortly afterwards he was joined by Dave Fanning, ex-Innocent Bystander bassist. During this period the band recorded numerous DIY demo cassettes. In 1983 The Apostles released their first 7" single and were joined by 14 year old Scottish drummer Chris Low, ex-Political Asylum. It is from this time that The Apostles have been described as having started their 'proper recording career', releasing four classic singles, the best of which are shortly to see a long overdue re-release on CD, plus numerous full-length albums and further cassette releases.

The Apostles split up in 1989, immediately forming Academy 23 who released a number of works. Andy Martin & Dave Fanning continued as Unit (6) although Dave Fanning left Unit in 2007, leaving Andy Martin and Colin Murrell as the only members of Apostles in UNIT.

I'm happy to thoroughly recommend the latest  dispatch from  Jah Wobble's ongoing musical journey, boldly going where no musician has gone before. In short, another stunningly original set of tunes. I'll do my best to describe it, but keep in mind that these folks stick as many ideas into a single song than most bands could fit into a box set retrospective. I could spend all day trying to describe the various twists and turns each song takes. I've listened to it about three times a day for the last four days and I still hear something new in each tune each time. The album has the loose, friendly, improvised, feel of a live jam session. In mood it reminds me of nothing more than a classic Alice Coltrane record. The constant is the foundation that Wobble's bass and Liebezeit's drums provide.

For most of the record they're like one instrument. Various other musicians and instruments go at it on top of them. The first four tunes have an Indian feel to them, thanks to the sitar, tabla, and wordless vocals of B Shrivastav. And as if that wasn't enough, you also have C Bell's various high end pipes skitting around and JP Rasle's low end pipes getting a word in too. JP Rasle and B Shrivastav go home before the fifth track, 'Acting the Goat' starts. They're replaced by Wobble on keyboards. C Bell takes advantage of the extra space, honking and piping all over the place. Headphones recommended for the stereo goathorns solo! The sixth and last track is a whole new direction, as Wobble, Liebezeit, and J Cadbury channel Fela Kuti with their own version of an Afro-beat rhythm. C Bell's gone home, so H Becket's trumpet takes centre stage with Wobble and C Murphy making with the keyboards when you least expect it. Another masterpiece from start to finish. (Fodderstompf)

Of all the music world's Venn Diagrams, I would have expected there to be no overlap between that of LaBelle and Captain Beefheart, but here is this album, a lone dot on that curious netherworld. 

Some background: Captain Beefheart was the psudonym for Don Van Vliet, a wild painter, blues howler, compatriot of Frank Zappa, brutal abuser of his (perhaps because of his abuse) ridiculously tight Magic Band of which Gary Lucas is a survivor and continuer of the curious music he made with the Captain who stopped recording in 1980 and left this dull world a decade later. The key document is TROUT MASK REPLICA.

Nona Hendryx was a member of Labelle, the genre-shifting girl-group turned woman-power trio of the 60s-70s most notably responsible for "Lady Marmalade."  Their work is worth seeking out.

Gary Lucas has made a career out of restaging his late taskmaster's music in small rock groups and large scale orchestras, and in one of those forms Nona Hendryx was enlisted, one guesses as a novelty. A long celebrated R&B and jazz vocalist, Ms. Hendryx's versatile gift is an oddly weird fit for this music.

Beefheart's plaintive soul croon "I'm Glad", a doo wop number off his first LP SAFE AS MILK is rendered in luxurious velvet by Ms. Hendryx and when I heard it, I was like oh, of course. Her graceful reading of "My Head Is My Only House When it Rains" reveals the river of song that flows beneath troll Beffheart's bridge.

Even the beatnik proto-rapism of Beefheart's "Sun Zoom Spark" makes sense in their hands. The Captain's cocksure swagger is only strengthened coming out of Ms. Hendryx's mouth. She growls, commands, come-ons. "When it Blows It Stacks" is rendedred in a Zeppelin gone disco (something I wish had happened) wide strokes. It is glorious and lethal. 

Nona Hendryx is a natch for Beefheart's boho blues shtick since she is an actual blues singer. The affectations of CB's "Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do" are rendered here with actual authority. Also, Captain Beefheart had a notorious wide vocal range stretching several octaves. So does Nona, but with a sharpshooters accuracy for the pitches in between. 

The beauty of this record is that it is still difficult listening. Much of Nona Hendryx's career has been involved with getting the party started, whereas this one could clear the room. (See the oddball The Smithsonian Institute Blues" or "Suction Prints")  But then there are fabulous amalgams like the tilted reggae reading of "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles" twisted enough to play on latenight college radio (if that still exists) yet groovy enough to be piped in at brunch (I know brunch still exists). I have a number of friends who hate Captain Beefheart, for myriad reasons. Here's hoping I can get them lost in his groove, licking the wild marmalade off his toast. (OutsideLeft.com)

Riding high on their career-crowning post-rock masterpiece OK Computer, Radiohead could have gone anywhere. And they did. Partly in reaction to the depression, writer’s block and nausea that Thom Yorke experienced in the wake of huge critical and commercial acclaim, the Oxford quintet radically changed their writing methods and sound palette. Guitar-centric rock songs were out, replaced by avant-jazz mood pieces and electro-classical soundscapes. Melody was deconstructed, rhythms scrambled, vocals mangled and manipulated, lyrics spliced into cut-up collages. No longer seeking to emulate Scott Walker, Björk, Jeff Buckley and DJ Shadow, Radiohead were now aiming for a plateau beyond rock: to Aphex Twin and Arvo Pärt, Mingus and Messiaen, Can and Eno and Penderecki.

Repackaging sister albums Kid A and Amnesiac with an extra disc of alternate cuts and lost tracks, this boxset revisits the most divisive chapter in Radiohead’s career. Released in October 2000, Kid A certainly wrong-footed many reviewers: hipper gatekeeper critics deemed it derivative and self-congratulatory, while mainstream pundits found it impenetrable and wilfully obtuse. But two decades later, it mostly stands up as a boldly ambitious experiment for a major rock band, from the spiralling lounge-jazz incantation Everything In Its Right Place to the piledriving cyber-funk earworm Idioteque, the sumptuous orchestral ballad How To Disappear Completely and the gorgeous ambitronic reverie of Kid A itself. For all its challenging elements, the album became Radiohead’s first transatlantic chart-topper.

Recorded during the same sessions but released in May 2001, Amnesiac seemed at least partially designed to soothe more conservative Radiohead fans unsettled by Kid A. It certainly feels richer and broader overall, with more conventionally melodic, guitar-focused numbers like the swooping, circling Knives Out and the luminous torch song You And Whose Army, on which Yorke takes veiled potshots at Tony Blair in a plaintive Chet Baker falsetto. There is even an inspired guest appearance by veteran jazz icon Humphrey Lyttleton and his band, who clothe Yorke’s paranoid anti-fame ballad Life In A Glasshouse in bluesy, woozy, half-drunk swirls of New Orleans brass.
