John Lee Hooker - 1997 - Don't Look Back

John Lee Hooker - 1997 - Don't Look Back @320

With new John Lee Hooker songs, new versions of old Hooker songs, four duets with and a new song by Van Morrison, Don't Look Back continues the venerable bluesman's string of excellent albums in his '90s renaissance. Produced by Morrison, it also celebrates the 25th anniversary of their first recording together, as Morrison guested on Hooker's seminal Never Get Out of These Blues Alive in 1972. Don't Look Back hits the ground running with a rowdy, thumpin' remake of "Dimples" with Los Lobos; "Spellbound" pounds out more of Hooker's stylistic trademark -- throbbing, raw, hard-driving boogie. The Morrison tracks include the ruminative title cut and his haunting "The Healing Game." Hooker also gives Hendrix's classic blues "Red House" his own rough-hewn, distinctive treatment.(AllMusic)

Howlin' Wolf - 2007 - The Definitive Collection

Howlin' Wolf - 2007 - The Definitive Collection @320

At six foot three and 270 pounds, Chester Burnett was a bear of a man, but his voice, rough and harsh as broken Delta glass, was what really gave him dimension. A powerful blues shouter out of the Charley Patton mold, Burnett (or Howlin' Wolf, as he came to be known) brought a feral fire to his vocals that made him sound like a gale force hurricane in front of the microphone. But he was far from a loose cannon. He had remarkable control over that voice, as the first track from this wonderful collection of his classic Chess sides makes clear. "Moanin' at Midnight," recorded in 1958 for Sam Phillips (Phillips promptly sold the master to Chicago's Chess Records), is nothing more than an amped-up and electrified field holler, but Wolf's subtle, wordless vocal phrasing makes it carry enough pain, suffering, pride, desperation, and resignation to fill the world to breaking, all in a single rocking performance that hits like a brick to the head. The Chess brothers recorded Wolf frequently in the next dozen or so years, wisely pairing him with guitarist Hubert Sumlin and bassist/songwriter Willie Dixon more often than not, and Wolf's output for the label between 1958 and 1964 forms the core of one of the greatest legacies in the history of the blues. All of his key Chess singles are here, including "Smokestack Lightning," his redefinitions of the Mississippi Sheiks' "Sittin' on Top of the World" and Skip James' "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues" (reborn as "Killing Floor" in Wolf's hands), and his signature versions of Dixon's "Backdoor Man," "Spoonful," "The Red Rooster," and "I Ain't Superstitious," making this set a marvelous introduction to one of the most powerful voices in recorded history. What you need to hear is here. [The Definitive Collection contains the same tracks as the 1997 MCA release His Best]. (AllMusic)

Townes Van Zandt - 1973 - Live at The Old Quarter (1977)

Townes Van Zandt - 1973 - Live at The Old Quarter (1977) @320

Townes Van Zandt is better regarded as a songwriter than as a performer, and not without reason -- he was a peerless lyricist with a singular ability to capture the landscape of the heart and soul in words, but while he was a fine singer he wasn't exceptional, and the ravages of alcohol, tobacco and drugs took a fearsome toll on his voice in his last years. But Van Zandt could work magic in front of an audience under the right circumstances, and while a wealth of live recordings of Van Zandt have emerged since his passing on the first day of 1997, Live at the Old Quarter, Houston, Texas ranks with the very best of his concert albums. Live at the Old Quarter is simple and spare, capturing Van Zandt in a 1973 solo performance at a Houston saloon with just his acoustic guitar for company, and the engineering ably captures the ambience of the room, with the audience clearly caught up in the spell of these songs. The set features 26 songs, all originals except for covers of "Cocaine Blues," "Nine Pound Hammer," and "Who Do You Love," and Van Zandt brigs these tunes to life with an easy grace that's a striking complement to the emotional gravity of his lyrics, though he also gives his lighter side an airing here, occasionally cracking jokes and offering a pair of funny talking blues numbers, "Talking Thunderbird Blues" and "Fraternity Blues." If the renditions of "Pancho & Lefty," "If I Needed You," "Rex's Blues," "For the Sake of the Song," and "Tecumseh Valley" aren't quite definitive, they're beautiful and affecting, and thanks to the sharp performances, on-point vocals, and superb set list, this is a superior document of Townes Van Zandt on-stage, and is a fine introduction to his body of work. V.A. - The Complete History Of The Blues 1920 - 1962 (2015)

V.A. - The Complete History Of The Blues 1920 - 1962 (2015) @320

100 songs by the Blues' biggest names from the genre's golden period of 1920-1962. This set contains the artists and songs that changed the musical landscape forever and influenced almost everything that followed. Features songs reintepreted and made more famous by the likes of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Doors, The Yardbirds and many more. This set comes with a 28 page illustrated booklet including discographical information and an essay about this fascinating subject. The perfect snapshot for anyone interested in the genre or those wanting to know how modern rock music was formulated.

This is a superb compilation of blues records that starts in 1920 with the first ever blues record "Crazy Blues" by Mamie Smith, together with songs from other classic blues singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey before going on to the cream of country blues singers, including Blind Blake, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, Furry Lewis etc etc. As well as guitarists we also get piano players,, such as Albert Ammons, Little Brother Montgomery and Roosevelt Sykes and also the wonderful jug bands of Gus Cannon and the Mississippi Sheiks as we proceed in chronological order through the development of blues music. The cut off date of 1962 also means that we take in classic 50s Chicago blues from Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Elmore James and also the electric guitar players including the Kings (BB, Albert and Freddie), Buddy Guy, Otis Rush etc. However, it isn't just the inclusion of all these key names in blues history that makes this 4-CD set such a marvellous compilation that is invaluable as a one-stop-shop for blues veterans, as well as a great introduction for blues newbies. Every track is particularly well-chosen to represent both the artist and their influence, as well as rounding up particularly significant songs and performances - "Nobody's fault but mine" - Blind Willie Johnson, "Mama don't allow it" - Washboard Sam, "Junker Blues" - Champion Jack Dupree and on and on.
