1980 - Bullwackies All Stars - Natures Dub

1980 - Bullwackies All Stars - Natures Dub (Flac)

During the early '80s, New York-based reggae producer Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes was creating some of the most well-crafted traditional dub reggae anywhere, including Jamaica. Unfortunately, the albums he made did not fare well in the transitional period between vinyl LPs and compact discs, and most of his catalog was either out of print or virtually impossible to obtain by the end of the decade. A CD reissue campaign in 2002 brought this dub album back into the marketplace, and it's a gem. Featuring rhythms courtesy of the Bullwackies All Stars and the New Breed Band, as well as occasional singjay vocals by Jah Batta, Natures Dub is jam-packed with dark, smoky dub grooves that hark back explicitly to the sound of Lee "Scratch" Perry's Black Ark without sounding wholly derivative. Among the highlight tracks are the legendary "Rockfort Rock," with its faint whiff of flute and descending bassline, and a nice cut of the Junior Delgado classic "Sons of Slaves." A must-have for any dub collection. (AllMusic)

Bunny Wailer - 1980 - Rock N Groove (Remastered 2007)

 Bunny Wailer - 1980 - Rock N Groove (Remastered 2007) @320

When this album was first released in 1980 it met with phenomenal responses, both in Jamaica and abroad as the most significant new release in reggae, exemplifying what was considered to be the forefront of Jamaican music. Now available for the first time on CD, this re-mastered 17 track masterpiece includes new liner notes written by Bunny himself, as well as 8 bonus tracks that Bunny hand-picked to add to this CD's timeless musical relevance. Considered by many experts to be one of Bunny's greatest releases in his long and illustrious career, the album is sure to excite new reggae fans worldwide. Most of these songs are part of Bunny's live stage shows, which have been tearing it up both in Europe and the US for the past several years. This three-time Grammy winner has decided the time is right to reissue this rich musical treasure, as the new reggae dancehall fans need some positive nourishment. (Amazon)

Holger Czukay - 1980 - Movies

Holger Czukay - 1980 - Movies @320

Holger Czukay's first post-Can solo album finds the bass player exploring prog rock jams with varied instrumentation, song-oriented lyrics, and media samples from film, television, and short-wave. It was the samples that put Czukay in the same category as David Byrne and Brian Eno: an art rocker exploring the early days concurrently with early hip-hop pioneers (or alternately, a white man exploiting the culture of the third world, depending on who you read). On "Persian Love," Czukay backs up clips of an Iranian singer recorded off the short-wave with lilting guitar and keyboard riffs that sparkle like light. The album is all pleasant, playful textures, with little of the darkness that Can dallied with. (AllMusic)

Family Fodder - Monkey Banana Kitchen (1980) Vinyl Rip @320

Another vinyl rip I found the other day. Yeah was in flac but like the Fire Engines I shared earlier today, but I converted both into 320, easier to post and Flac moved into my Flac HD.

Family Fodder formed around 1975.
Line-up included Alig (John Pearce), Ian Hill, Dominique Levillain, Felix Fiedorowicz, Martin Frederix, Bazz Smith, Graham Painting, Mark Doffmann, Lynn Alice.
Their music incorporated acoustic, soft rock, punk, new wave, reggae, dub, classical and chanson.
Lynn Alice later took the place as lead singer of Dominique Levillain who went into teaching her own creative technique known as Prymary Rhythms (Ryhtmes Premiers).
Rick Wilson and Mick Hobbs (The Work), Charles Bullen, Charles Hayward (This Heat) and David Cunningham or Judy Carter have also collaborated with the group.

Johnny Clarke - 1980 - Originally Mr Clarke

Johnny Clarke - 1980 - Originally Mr Clarke @320

Originally Mr. Clarke was first released in 1980 on Brad Osborne's Bronx-based Clocktower label, and it is Osborne's involvement that gives this unsung little gem its unique sound. The basic instrumental and vocal tracks were recorded in Jamaica, most likely under the guidance of producer Bunny Lee (although singer Johnny Clarke himself may have supervised the sessions) and featured veteran studio pros like Glen Adams, Sly & Robbie, Tommy McCook, Earl "Chinna" Smith and Winston Wright (more or less the Aggrovators). The raw tracks were then taken to New York, where Osborn overdubbed flute, additional vocals and percussion and oversaw the final mixes. The end result was a wonderfully cohesive sequence that featured light, airy and yet active arrangements, full of well-placed and effective horn charts, all of which perfectly framed Clarke's sweet, soulful and elegantly unhurried vocals, making Originally Mr. Clarke that rarest of reggae artifacts -- an album that sounds like it was meant to be an album and not just a collection of singles. Two of Clarke's better-known songs are included, "Blood Dunza" and "Every Knee Shall Bow," as well as the heartfelt and wistful "Moving on to Zion," which examines the urge to leave Jamaica and contains some of the best lyrics Clarke ever wrote.
