By the time Gregory Isaacs stepped into the studio to record "More Gregory" in 1981, the Cool Ruler had already established himself as reggae's premier romantic crooner, his silky falsetto becoming as synonymous with lovers rock as Bob Marley's growl was with roots rebellion. Following the international breakthrough of his previous album "Soon Forward" and riding high on the success of singles like "Night Nurse," Isaacs found himself at a creative crossroads – how do you follow perfection? The answer, it turns out, was to simply give the people more of what they craved.

Gregory Isaacs -1983 - Out Deh
On this effort, Gregory Isaacs and the Roots Radics band continue to be a potent combination, though Out Deh! never does rise to the same level of genius as that displayed on Night Nurse and Lonely Lover. It does offer a rather unusual (for Isaacs) mix of lovers rock and political/spiritual lyrics, reflecting in part the time he had spent in prison on a gun charge prior to recording this album. Highlights include the typically sly "Private Secretary" and the album's title track, a quietly powerful meditation on Isaacs' prison term. This reissue features crisp remastered sound and a couple of bonus tracks -- the brilliant "Cream of the Crop" and a rather superfluous remix of "Love Me With a Feeling" -- as well as informative liner notes courtesy of David Katz, author of the definitive biography of Lee "Scratch" Perry. Recommended. (Barnes&Noble)

Gregory Isaacs -1988 - Red Rose For Gregory
Red Rose for Gregory is among the best full-length releases from legendary Reggae crooner; Gregory Isaacs. Recorded for producer Gussie Clarke, the album features Clarke's red-hot studio band with the Mighty Diamonds and J. C. Lodge handling backing vocals. With "Rumours" being the stand-out hit, the rest of the record stands shoulder to shoulder with it in terms of quality. Clarke's signature style -- deep, reverberated bass, fat beats, and sparse musical arrangements -- delighted the dancehalls, and the openness of his sound was perfect for DJs to chatter across. It also was a treat for singers, as it allowed emotions to bleed through, and provided space to drop in backing vocals and further instrumentation as needed. Isaacs took full advantage of the opportunities presented and gifted Clarke with some of his best performances. The passionate declaration of love on "All I Need Is You," the intimacy of the title track, as the singer muses about the identity of a secret admirer, and the lovely, easy-going "Slow Down" are just some of the standouts here. And then there's the hits. "Rumours," of course, but also the tough "Rough Neck" and the stunning "Mind Yu Dis," all appear here in spectacular 12" extended mixes, alongside a promotional 12" version of "Teacher's Plight." This is truly Isaacs at the heights of his dancehall glory. (Bandcamp)
