Given Lila Iké’s popularity in the reggae music scene, it’s hard to believe the newly released Treasure Self Love is her debut full-length album. Fans have been understandably giddy over the singer since 2020’s The ExPerience EP put her on the path to worldwide stardom. Still, when an artist has so much hype, disappointment can feel inevitable. Thankfully, that’s not the case here, as Treasure Self Love is further proof that Iké is the real deal (not that we needed any).

The album features several notable collaborations, and each of them perfectly amplify Iké’s distinctive talents. Joey Bada$$ brings playful energy to “Fry Plantain,” while Maverick Sabre lends warmth to “All That and More.” Perhaps the most daring track is “He Loves Us Both” with H.E.R., an engaging tune that finds two female powerhouses joining forces in to great success.

For an artist that has quickly been hailed as reggae’s next superstar, Iké also exudes respect for the genre’s trailblazers. Her fantastic cover of Patra’s 1993 classic “Romantic Call” – here called “Romantic” – is a thoughtful nod to dancehall history. Likewise, “Love in a Lovely Way” cleverly intertwines Garnett Silk’s “Place in Your Heart,” managing to be both fresh and nostalgic at the same time.

Throughout Treasure Self Love, Iké blends a variety of influences. Yes, reggae is at the heart of everything, but soul, R&B, and hip hop also factor into her sound. The singer also showcases songwriting talent well beyond her years, displaying strength, vulnerability and power within her lyrics.

During a recent conversation with Grammy.com, Iké described Treasure Self Love as “a journey of learning to love myself, understanding that each and every one of us should be able to treasure ourselves and value ourselves.”

“Every time I make music, every time I get to another level, every time that I’ve ticked off an accomplishment or overcome a particular milestone, it’s just a reminder to just continuously evolve,” she continued, “to continuously work on getting better and especially to just learn myself because you really don’t know what you’re capable of until you do it.”

Treasure Self Love is proof that the journey — and the evolution — was well worth the wait. (The Pier)

Tokyo Tea Room is a project that blends the intricate layers of dream pop with the heartfelt grooves of indie soul. This unique combination results in a sound that is both nostalgic and contemporary, capturing the imaginations of listeners with catchy melodies and emotive lyrics. Behind the music is songwriter/singer Daniel James Elliott, joined by Ben Marshall on bass, Sam Teather on drums, and Beth Dunn on vocals, recording from the band’s studio in their hometown of Margate, UK.

This album cover is quite mysterious, isn't it? Let's uncover what's behind it. The first notes of the opening track immediately set the tone: the journey begins. Take the album title literally and allow yourself to be comforted by the tenderness the British band is about to offer.

LRK is proud to announce the 7:45s will be releasing their debut album Spinning on 20 June.

The 7:45s are an original soul collective from Manchester, UK – the brainchild of songwriter and bassist Sam Flynn. Inspired by the house bands of soul labels from Motown to Big Crown, the young collective spotlights guest vocalists such as Martin Connor and Nicole Battick. Named after 7-inch vinyl, The 7:45s write snappy singles that blend the vintage feel of rare groove with the songcraft of perfect pop.The 7:45s have been played on BBC Radio 6 Music by Craig Charles, Stuart Maconie and Chris Hawkins and on Jazz FM by Simon Phillips.

A concept album for the soul, Spinning is a retro-soul love story. Side A is sunshine soul about the dizziness of an on-off relationship, as heard in the Charles Bradley-inspired opener ‘The Way That I Love You’. Side B is nocturnal. Head-spinning heartbreak is the subject of rare groove-influenced ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’ while dancing to a new dawn is the theme of Prince-inspired disco number ‘We Will Be Friends’. The album also features a reimagination of The Beatles’ ‘Don’t Let Me Down’.

Spinning is released digitally, on vinyl and on CD through LRK Records on 20 June 2025. The 7:45s are launching the album with a live gig at the Carlton Club (Manchester) on 25 June, with support from Ellen Beth Abdi. Delightful. That’s what this music is in a single word. Their voices with expertise, warmth & feelings in the heart of rural homecoming love begin on the opening tune — the marvelous “Room On the Porch.” Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’ & Ruby Amanfu conjure tears of happiness with their unified voices & emotional sophistication. What a cure for what ails ya.

Their voices, along with this repertoire, is a soundscape. The lighthearted instrumentation is a benevolent caress to the ears. “My Darling My Dear” is plaintive, catchy, & possesses good vocal contrasts. These voices can pull your ear in slowly on a silken line. Mr. Mahal has always had a soothing, authoritative tonality (one of his most impressive tunes being the energetic song “Freedom Ride” from an exceptional LP known as Largo).

They mix it up generously, & trade off lead vocals with skill on “She Keeps Me Movin’” that’s dipped in hot buttered soul (as Isaac Hayes would say). The set is well arranged & each tune is deliciously creative in this showcase. I’ve been listening to the NY-born Grammy Award winner Taj Mahal since his early Columbia days & Grammy Award winner L.A.-born Keb’ Mo’ since I saw him perform “More Than One Way Home” in 1996. They’re part of the landscape of Americana & Taj even appeared in the Americana-rich film “Songcatcher.”

The musicianship is stellar throughout. The upbeat “Thicker Than Mud” embodies the qualities of their genre & this duo serves up the roots-Americana musicality imaginatively & with dazzling results. “Junkyard Dog” will make Tom Waits envious, & “Blues’ll Give You Back Your Soul” & “Rough Time Blues” harken back to Taj’s Columbia “Giant Step/De Ole Folks at Home” era.

The music goes comfortably with a sleeping dog, a bottle of hooch, a rocking chair & of course, a porch. I found my summer music. It’s one of the year’s best. I’ll say it again; it’s one of the year’s best. (American Highways)

Lyres – On Fyre At The Rusty Nail 1985 (2025) 320

** The Rusty Nail was a throwback to an earlier time, a wayward roadhouse/live music venue in the wilds of Western Massachusetts, located 15 minutes up the road from the University of Massachusetts, in the woodsy hill town of Sunderland, population 3400. The wood hewn hole in the wall featured an eclectic variety of touring acts, who would bypass the bigger college towns in favor of playing at the Nail. I saw James Brown and the Buzzcocks there, to name a couple. However, for my money, the greatest show ever staged at the Rusty Nail was Lyres’ performance on March 29, 1985.

The band was road-tested and on top of their game, having toured the US and Europe relentlessly in the months prior, in support of their 1984 album On Fyre. They tore through a fast and furious set, an hour and change of non-stop rock 'n' roll, pausing only for Jeff Conolly to tell the audience, "This is a one o'clock club, which means you have to drink twice as fast."

As Lyres closed the show with "What a Girl Can't Do," the audience was left awestruck, buzzing, and sweaty.

Exactly four months after this show was recorded, the Rusty Nail burned to the ground.

Some said the fire was caused by faulty wiring, while others alleged an insurance bust-out scheme. My favourite theory is that it was burned down by local residents who were sick and tired of Rusty Nail patrons parking, pissing, and/or puking on their lawns.

I consider this album to be the finest Lyres live recording in existence. It has been pitch-corrected, remixed, and remastered from the original two track soundboard recording. On Fyre at the Rusty Nail 1985 is a testament to Lyres as not just one of the greatest bands from Boston, but one of the greatest bands from anywhere. **

* For over a decade, Black Sabbitch has been selling out shows and wowing even the most difficult to please Sabbath worshipers, gaining a rabid fan base and the respect of critics, fans, and musicians alike. They have become festival favorites, consistently performing with some of the world’s biggest acts, in a world seldom traveled by your typical “tribute” band. Black Sabbitch was hand-picked by Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne to open the inaugural Ozzfiesta, by Paul Stanley to play with Kiss on the final Kiss Kruise, and by Dave Grohl to play Cal Jam with Foo Fighters and Iggy Pop, after which the FooFighters shared photos of Black Sabbitch saying "we were spellbound.” They recently played headlining sets at Psycho Las Vegas with The Flaming Lips, Danzig, Ty Segal, and at the UK's prestigious Boomtown Fair. Nick Zinner of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs chose Black Sabbitch to headline his curated festival Bedrocktoberfest and legendary street artist Shepard Fairey had Black Sabbitch open his Black Sabbath retrospective, Never Say Die. This year they will follow up their performance at Full Metal Holiday in Majorca Spain with a set at the world's largest hard rock festival Wacken Open Air with an attendance of 80,000 people. Electroclash superstar Peaches recently sat in as lead vocalist with Black Sabbitch for a special two-night run in Los Angeles.

Dame Shirley Bassey – The Singer (Classic And Undiscovered Gems From The EMI/UA Years 1962-79) (2025) 320

* Well I got this for sentiment reasons, last year when it came out, my late mother was a big fan of Shirley, I got my love of music from my mother and my love of football from my Dad, they both sadly passed a long time ago. *

* Yeah I share a lot of music I love here on Vibes, but I also share music, that is not really me. I have always shared music, firstly via tapes (cassettes) and then later via CDr's and then digital music. So I have collect stuff that I think others might want, just to pass it on. That's just the person I am. But it gives pleasure to others. *

* I have never ever got albums because of reading an album review, music is very personal, we don't all have the same tastes thanks to god. I use my ears and if I like then it stays, if not then it goes. But you have to listen to it first, use your own judgement, don't follow trend. As a punk, I liked many bands, my punk mates didn't, but I listened and made up my own mind on music. *

Angelic, almost hypnotic, Kelissa’s tender chants draw us into the captivating sonic universe of her brother Keznamdi and his second album Blxxd & Fyah. Following his highly acclaimed debut Bloodline in 2020, the Kingstonian singer returns this summer with a powerful new body of work comprising 13 compelling track that impress both musically and lyrically.

The monumental opening track, aptly titled I Am, delves into the “omnipotent-ness of the word God“and takes listeners on an evocative journey through human history – from ancient Egypt and the crucifixion of Jesus to our own personal origin stories, starting with birth and cutting the cord. Delicate flute melodies and a plaintive violin create goosebumps, before the rising choir adds emotional dynamic.

The mystically African-inspired soundscape seamlessly transitions into a quote by Dr. Arikana Chihombori Quao, a medical doctor and acitivist, as she speaks on the shocking “pact for the continuation of colonization in Africa”. She is not the only one given voice through original recordings: Keznamdi also includes a passionate excerpt from a speech by his father Errol “Chakula” McDonald – a singer, musician and devoted member of the Rastafari community himself – urging unity and “to come together as an executive body and identify what we want to do.” These original recordings are as moving as they are motivating.

Keznamdi’s lyrics, too, are rich with historical references about Paul Bogle and the Morant Bay Rebellion or Marcus Garvey; they offer sharp critiques of political and social developments, while also delving into personal and emotional themes of gratitude, appreciation, love, and spirituality. Pressure addresses the economic burdens caused by minimum wage, rising prices, and resource scarcity, highlighting a political landscape more consumed with itself than with the struggles of the people. Identity Crisis tackles the dangers of new media, where an entire generation, “glued to the screens”, risks sacrificing truth in the pursuit of likes and views.

Keznamdi, describing himself as a songwriter, largely self-produced the album, with select tracks co-produced by VAS Productions, Major Seven, and keyboardist Llamar “Riff Raff” Brown. Besides his sister Kelissa, guest features by Masicka, Mavado, and Marlon Asher enrich the album with precisely calibrated and beautifully harmonious performances. A vibrant and spirited cover of Toots Hibbert’s Pomps and Pride is a radiant highlight.

In the track list each song is thoughtfully placed, contributing to a layered narrative centered on the theme of Colonial Bondage. Musically, the artist remains rooted in his Jamaican Reggae heritage while skillfully blending classic elements like the drumming with fresh textures and compelling beats, resulting in a contemporary and modern sound. With Blxxd & Fyah, Keznamdi created a holistic and truly accomplished body of work that is both thematically profound and musically diverse.
