British trip-hop pioneers Morcheeba return with their first new album in over five years. The band have released eight albums that have sold in excess of 10 million records in their career. Blaze Away, their positivity-packed ninth album, marks both a fresh start in it’s organic approach and a return to the joyous genre-mashing of their early days, with featured guests Roots Manuva and Benjamin Biolay. There was no template for it’s ten, extraordinary, future-facing songs, no self-imposed limits on style, no themes to be adhered to or rules in place to break. She’s back—and thank goodness! Skye Edwards rejoins Morcheeba on this latest outing, bringing her soulful yet playful vocals to the already intricate mesh work of trip-hop and deep-diving soul. As guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Ross Godfrey says, “As soon as we heard her singing over our backing tracks, it was magic. There’s a definite vibe that happens when the three of us work together, a combination of things that’s unquantifiable. It’s so personal to us, such a big part of our lives, that we got quite emotional about it. After that, it all worked out in a very natural way.”

And that vibe is in over-abundance throughout the album—from the African thumb-piano on “Even Though” to sitar and blues harmonica on “Mandala,” all cozily wrapped up by Edwards’ beautiful tone. Each track flows seamlessly into the next—you’d never know that they were flying tracks between Edwards, Ross Godfrey and Paul Godfrey at their respective home studios, with Ross Godfrey laying down guitar parts in Hollywood, Edwards recording vocals in Surrey and bringing it all together at Paul Godfrey’s France-based digs.

Blood Like Lemonade is a true delight for longtime Morcheeba fans—who were eager to have Edwards back in the fold—and newcomers, who may have gotten into the band with their last album, Dive Deep, which was basically the Godfreys working with a rotating cast of guest vocalists. Parts of the Process is an apt title for this greatest hits collection from British electronica/trip-hop trio Morcheeba. While not exactly the “best of the best” (missing from the collection is the overwhelmingly stellar “Who Can You Trust” from the group’s debut of the same name), the disc is still an ideal way to become familiar with this ambient band’s unique style. It’s also an excellent showcase for Skye Edwards’s enchanting voice, as demonstrated on the smooth and graceful opening track “The Sea” and the airy “Can’t Stand It.” The former is a display of Morcheeba’s masterful brand of pop balladry. The addition of two brand new tracks, including an appearance by rapper Big Daddy Kane on “What’s Your Name,” strongly points to Morcheeba’s forward momentum as they sum up a seven-year career on 18 tracks of fluid, techno-enhanced pop tunes.(Slant Magazine)
