Howlin' Wolf - 2007 - The Definitive Collection

Howlin' Wolf - 2007 - The Definitive Collection @320

At six foot three and 270 pounds, Chester Burnett was a bear of a man, but his voice, rough and harsh as broken Delta glass, was what really gave him dimension. A powerful blues shouter out of the Charley Patton mold, Burnett (or Howlin' Wolf, as he came to be known) brought a feral fire to his vocals that made him sound like a gale force hurricane in front of the microphone. But he was far from a loose cannon. He had remarkable control over that voice, as the first track from this wonderful collection of his classic Chess sides makes clear. "Moanin' at Midnight," recorded in 1958 for Sam Phillips (Phillips promptly sold the master to Chicago's Chess Records), is nothing more than an amped-up and electrified field holler, but Wolf's subtle, wordless vocal phrasing makes it carry enough pain, suffering, pride, desperation, and resignation to fill the world to breaking, all in a single rocking performance that hits like a brick to the head. The Chess brothers recorded Wolf frequently in the next dozen or so years, wisely pairing him with guitarist Hubert Sumlin and bassist/songwriter Willie Dixon more often than not, and Wolf's output for the label between 1958 and 1964 forms the core of one of the greatest legacies in the history of the blues. All of his key Chess singles are here, including "Smokestack Lightning," his redefinitions of the Mississippi Sheiks' "Sittin' on Top of the World" and Skip James' "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues" (reborn as "Killing Floor" in Wolf's hands), and his signature versions of Dixon's "Backdoor Man," "Spoonful," "The Red Rooster," and "I Ain't Superstitious," making this set a marvelous introduction to one of the most powerful voices in recorded history. What you need to hear is here. [The Definitive Collection contains the same tracks as the 1997 MCA release His Best]. (AllMusic)

Radiohead - 1997 - Ok Computer OKNOTOK (2007)

 Radiohead - 1997 - Ok Computer OKNOTOK (2007) @320

OK Computer OKNOTOK 1997 2017 is a reissue of the 1997 album OK Computer by the English rock band Radiohead. It was released in June 2017, the album's 20th anniversary, following the 2016 acquisition of Radiohead's back catalogue by XL Recordings from EMI.

OKNOTOK comprises remastered versions of OK Computer and its B-sides, plus three previously unreleased songs: "I Promise", "Man of War" and "Lift". The special edition includes an art book, notes, and a cassette tape of demos and session recordings. Unlike previous Radiohead reissues, which were released by EMI without Radiohead's involvement and contained no new material, the band curated the OKNOTOK material themselves.

Radiohead promoted OKNOTOK with a teaser campaign of posters and videos. Music videos were released for the three new songs, and "I Promise" and "Man of War" were released as singles. OKNOTOK debuted at number two in the UK Albums Chart and was the bestselling album in UK independent record stores for a year. In the US, it reached number 23 on the Billboard 200. It received acclaim, particularly for its bonus material.

Habib Koité - 2007 - Afriki

Habib Koité - 2007 - Afriki @320

This is the Malian singer and guitarist's first studio album for six years. Koité is supposedly a slow worker because he's a studio craftsman who pays great attention to sonic detail. Listening to Afrika, this is surely the case, as it's a finely-drawn work of studied acoustic arrangements, with more of an emphasis on organic naturalness than its 2001 predecessor Baro. Although relatively unknown on these shores, Koité has sold wagonloads of albums in the USA, and appears to devote much of his touring time to the rest of Europe. Soon, his time will come in the UK.

Koité formed his Bamada band in 1988, deriving from the nickname given to residents of Bamako. He started to receive increased attention in the States after collaborating with Bonnie Raitt and appearing on the Dave Letterman show.

Even though Koité's delivery could be deemed mellow, this quality is not at the expense of an innate Malian folksiness. His voice is deep and smooth, although Koité has the range to encompass a Fela Kuti-ish roughness on some of the songs. The balafon (marimba) is a prominent element, but Koité also utilises Anglo-American song construction and production languages to present his Malian essence with an sense of expert balance. This is why he's such a successful crossover artist.

Koité's rich, honeyed vocals and detailed guitar figures always lie at the heart of each song, but he also invites a broad spread of colours that include violin (both rough and smooth), subliminal mood-bass and a varied percussion array. There are also stray appearances made by n'goni and some hoarse hunting horns.

"N'ba" has a soft reggae lilt, "Mali Ba" is sparsely lit, with harmonica shadings, and "N'Teri" has a more uplifting vibration, with tinglesome female backing vocals responding to Koité's lines whilst strings make sweepingly elaborate gestures. The album closes in a typically varied fashion, with "Titati", an acoustic guitar meditation. (BBC MUSIC)
