Ye Ascoyne d’Ascoynes were four Medway wannabes/would-bes who fired their own brand of Garage/Punk/Pop across the land.

Starting in late 1988, The Dentists’ Bob Collins and ex-Dentist Ian Greensmith gathered in Medway’s legendary ‘The Hole’ to play some 60s Garage Punk covers, also roping in Mark Aitken and Kevin Younger to form a firm line-up.

After a year of blasting faves from the Pebbles compilations, they decided not only to add in a few ‘garaged up’ covers of other lost classics, but also delving into writing their very own songs that combined their 60s Garage roots with later influences from the likes of Buzzcocks and Pavement.

Early 1990, they recorded a demo at Red Studios of six original songs, and a cover. Later that year, Kevin stepped down from the group.

Come 1992, The Ascoynes went back into the studio as a trio to record their one and only single ‘Just The Biggest Thing’, with Billy Childish as producer, subsequently releasing it on Billy’s Hangman Records label.

Early 1993, they went back to Red Studios to record more demos.

This album is a result of those two demo recordings. Supersonic Shoes provides prime unreleased early 90s Garage from the best Medway band you’ve never heard of.

The Ascoynes have since played a few shows, and have a few later this year.

Ye Ascoyne d’Ascoynes never split up, and still play the odd gig when duty calls, so do keep a look out!

Line Up:
Bob Collins - Vocals, Guitars.
Mark Aitken - Bass Guitar.
Ian Greensmith - Drums.
Kevin Younger - Keyboards.

Joan Armatrading - 1977 - Show Some Emotion

Joan Armatrading - 1977 - Show Some Emotion @320

This is an even better showcase for her multi-faceted musical talents than her last album, and that album was stunning. Again produced by Glyn Johns but now featuring a wider cast of characters, Show Some Emotion includes two of her best songs, “Show Some Emotion” and “Willow,” and strong material from end to end that tries out a variety of styles. At this stage, the comparison to other artists is meaningless as Joan Armatrading has entered an incomparable state. There isn’t another artist who moves so gracefully and confidently between ballads, rockers, reggae and blues, or would lead an album off with a vulnerable song like “Woncha Come On Home” and then sucker punch you with “Show Some Emotion.”

Her last album was a leap forward in terms of musicality, yet Show Some Emotion feels even more saturated in sound. Much of the credit goes to Glyn Johns, who assembled a stellar backing band for Joan that re-used a few familiar parts (Jerry Donahue, Brian Rogers) and added Georgie Fame, Bryan Garofalo, David Kemper and others to the mix. Given the right musical accompaniment, Joan’s compositions soar.

Although I did say that comparisons no longer applied, the presence of Georgie Fame did get me thinking about Van Morrison and the great musical support he’s had over the years. Like Van, Joan needs to make an emotional connection for her music to truly work, and that can sometimes be daunting given the complexity of her music. In the right hands, it runs like a graceful tiger. Even when Joan slows down on this record, the stride is perfectly paced, the steps perfectly placed, and happy are the hunted. (Progrogaphy)

Joan Armatrading - 1980 - Me Myself I

Joan Armatrading - 1980 - Me Myself I @320

On the trio of albums that made her reputation in 1976-1978, Joan Armatrading, Show Some Emotion, and To the Limit, Armatrading relied on the pristine production of Glyn Johns to underscore the sensitivity of her folk-based confessional songs. Here, on her first full-length album in two years, she turned to rock producer Richard Gottehrer and a session band that included Anton Fig, Chris Spedding, and members of the E Street Band, making her case for being a mainstream rocker. The songs were less serious, too, notably the title track, a U.K. hit. (The album's other British chart single was the ballad "All the Way from America," which was more in the style of her earlier work.) The result was the best-selling album Armatrading has ever had in either the U.S. or U.K. (AllMusic)

Joan Armatrading - 1981 - Walk Under Ladders

Joan Armatrading - 1981 - Walk Under Ladders @320

Second album packaged for Joan’s transition into a pop rock star, this Steve Lillywhite’s production is a mixed bag that works fine for the purpose of lighten the mood and de-dramatize the nevertheless correct perception of Armatrading as a sophisticated cultured musician, who here delivers an accessible palette of melodies arranged for the mainstream, but again with the usual care and impeccable taste. The biggest leap is the synth conducted new wave opener, “I’m lucky”, with its robotic phrasing and not linear pattern. “When I get it right” shows another fractured structure, this time recalling Police’s white reggae. “Romancers” is the warmest tune so far and indulges in its carribean celebration setting launching a relaxed sing-along. Finally the solid rock riff of “I wanna hold you” makes its way and we enjoy the first of the three in a row memorable moments in this selection, the second is “The weakness in me”, a touching introspective reflection where Joan offers all her vocal tones, and the third is the perfect harmony of “No love” with which Armatrading builds another outstanding epic at the same level of the past “Love and affection”, “All the way from America” and “Willow”. The musicians cast lets go in the tense “At the hop”, a rare treatment by the author about exuberance. The rest of the album goes on flirting with musical structure experimentations paying tribute again to Andy Summers (“I can’t lie to myself”) or developing synth ideas (liquid and bizarre in “Eating the bear”; ambient wise in “Only one”). This album just grows stronger at every listen. (AllMusic)

Ramones - 2001 - Anthology

Ramones - 2001 - Anthology @ 320

In a way, the Ramones are an ideal band to anthologize. No matter how cohesive their records were (or not), their albums always played like collections of singles and since singles are easy to anthologize, it stands to reason that the best of the Ramones' songs will sound good in nearly any context; hell, the haphazard Ramones Mania proved that. However, Rhino's double-disc Hey! Ho! Let's Go: Ramones Anthology has much greater goals than being just another collection -- it strives to be the final word on the Ramones. Weighing in at nearly 60 songs, with a hardcover book that includes an excellent history by David Fricke, it has to be said that the set has the heft of history, which is both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because Anthology does its job perfectly -- apart from "We're a Happy Family," no major songs are missing and it tells its history succinctly, even at its length. The problem is that the Ramones did drop in quality sometime after End of the Century. They never bottomed out, but their music became less exciting, which is evident in this anthology, as the second disc is simply not as compelling as the first. That's not to say it isn't good -- with "The KKK Took My Baby Away" and "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)," it can be great -- but it isn't timeless like the entire first disc is. Yet, this is nitpicking, since Anthology does a flawless job in summarizing the band's career. True, most listeners will wear out the first disc while rarely reaching for the second, but this is still essential.
