Paul Weller - 1993 - Wild Wood (Deluxe Edition 2007)

Paul Weller - 1993 - Wild Wood (Deluxe Edition 2007) (Flac)

Paul Weller AKA the Modfather has delivered a library's worth of quality music, style and sharp haircuts in his 30-year career that has made him somewhat of a national institution. Following the double whammies of The Jam and the Style Council, Weller truly established himself with his second solo outing, Wild Wood. This deluxe, digitally-remastered collector’s edition from the original master tapes, features the classic hit singles "Wild Wood", "Sunflower", "Hung Up" and "The Weaver", which allude to a plethora of classic influences, where songwriting really is an art in the vein of the pastoral folk/pop heroes such as; Nick Drake, Van Morrison and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Wild Wood was Weller making a record for himself and no-one else sounding like an album that could have been made in the 70s. The whole project, personally overseen by Weller and producer Brendan Lynch, has a real live quality to it. They even left in a lot of the mistakes during recording, which makes this a one-off, built on the foundations of Weller’s acoustic guitar and huskily soulful timbre. Layered with organ, piano, flute and Moog synthesizer there is always space in the songs, interspersed by instrumentals. Whether singing about how life gets you down ("Wild Wood") or broken relationships, ("All The Pictures On The Wall"), there’s always counterbalancing hope as in the acoustic folk soul of "Country" ('I know a place not far from here/ Where life’s sweet perfume fills the air/ And if you want I’ll take you there').

The CD also includes no less than 28 bonus tracks, demos, b-sides, mixes, alternative versions, BBC tracks and unreleased songs from the period which stand-up and would be sought after by any self respecting songwriter today. Perhaps the only less successful track is Weller’s take on The Small Faces' "I’m Only Dreaming", but we see a gospel influence on the previously unreleased "Oh Happy Day" and even a fantastic demo version of Neil Young’s agit-pop, "Ohio". With an engaging storyteller such as Weller at the helm, who needs more?

Morcheeba - 2013 - Head Up High

Morcheeba -  2013 - Head Up High @320

Now on their second album since original vocalist Skye Edwards rejoined the band, trip-hop veterans Morcheeba stretch their wings on Head Up High, an album that follows its guest stars into outside genres and generally messes about with the group's patented sound. It's obviously an inspirational move, as "Face of Danger" with rapper Chali 2na is a instantly gripping 2013 neo-disco near-sequel to Grace Jones' declarative hit "Demolition Man," while the pride-injected "To Be" with U.K. hip-hop duo Rizzle Kicks gets that dirt off the shoulder in the coolest of styles. "Finally Found You" with White Denim's James Petralli is a solid universal love song that would make the country charts if sung by Parton and Rogers or the R&B charts if sung by Austin and Ingram. The veteran trio is willing to explore on its own too, offering new sound with "Hypnotized," a sultry, sexy creeper readily available whenever Tarantino needs a cool soundtrack for seduction, while "Do You Good" is the kind of restrained electro cool that Goldfrapp used to own exclusively. "Make Believer" offers dub at a wicked dancehall pace, but power ballads aren't a natural fit for the group, as "Call It Love" cries at the sky looking for answers while lurching its way toward the fade-out. Some other experiments only warrant a B or B+ and the whole jumble might feel odd to a newcomer, but since it is mostly returning fans at this late point in the discography, Head Up High earns its title with only one or two flicks of the skip button. Otis Redding - 1965 - Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul (Collector's Edition)

Otis Redding - 1965 - Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul  (Collector's Edition) @320

Otis Redding's third album, and his first fully realized album, presents his talent unfettered, his direction clear, and his confidence emboldened, with fully half the songs representing a reach that extended his musical grasp. More than a quarter of this album is given over to Redding's versions of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December, and all three are worth owning and hearing. Two of them, "A Change Is Gonna Come" and "Shake," are every bit as essential as any soul recordings ever made, and while they (and much of this album) have reappeared on several anthologies, it's useful to hear the songs from those sessions juxtaposed with each other, and with "Wonderful World," which is seldom compiled elsewhere. Also featured are Redding's spellbinding renditions of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (a song epitomizing the fully formed Stax/Volt sound and which Mick Jagger and Keith Richards originally wrote in tribute to and imitation of Redding's style), "My Girl," and "You Don't Miss Your Water." "Respect" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long," two originals that were to loom large in his career, are here as well; the former became vastly popular in the hands of Aretha Franklin and the latter was an instant soul classic. Among the seldom-cited jewels here is a rendition of B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby" that has the singer sharing the spotlight with Steve Cropper, his playing alternately elegant and fiery, with Wayne Jackson and Gene "Bowlegs" Miller's trumpets and Andrew Love's and Floyd Newman's saxes providing the backing. Redding's powerful, remarkable singing throughout makes Otis Blue gritty, rich, and achingly alive, and an essential listening experience.

[Rhino's 2008 Collector's Edition undoubtedly adds a lot of music, but collectors should note it's short on previously unreleased material. Disc one contains the original mono album, and disc two the original stereo album, with each CD filled out by a good amount of live and studio bonus material. However, the only three previously unreleased cuts are mono mixes of the stereo album versions -- that's the exact terminology used on the sleeve -- of "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "Respect," and "Ole Man Trouble." That only qualifies as "previously unreleased," at least in sense of hearing music that's never been on the market before, by the barest of margins, though at least all of them run a little longer than the previously available versions. The inclusion of two B-sides ("Any Ole Way" and "I'm Depending on You") is nice, as is a fast studio take of "Respect" that was first issued on the 1992 compilation Remember Me. Historical liner notes by Stax scholar Rob Bowman are another good bonus. But as good as they are, the six and five cuts respectively from In Person at the Whisky a Go Go and Live in Europe must already be owned by most of the collectors interested in a release like this. As much good music as these two CDs contain, and as good as the packaging is, it falls into the uncomfortable gap of being too much for most fans -- who'll find the original unembellished album, in stereo or mono, just fine -- and not enough rarities for the true collector.] (AllMusic)

Morcheeba - 2019 - Blaze Away (Deluxe Version)

Morcheeba -  2019 - Blaze Away (Deluxe Version) @320

British trip-hop pioneers Morcheeba return with their first new album in over five years. The band have released eight albums that have sold in excess of 10 million records in their career. Blaze Away, their positivity-packed ninth album, marks both a fresh start in it’s organic approach and a return to the joyous genre-mashing of their early days, with featured guests Roots Manuva and Benjamin Biolay. There was no template for it’s ten, extraordinary, future-facing songs, no self-imposed limits on style, no themes to be adhered to or rules in place to break. Morcheeba’s global success is no surprise. Their melting pot sound has been border-hopping ever since the London-based band emerged from the mid-’90s trip hop scene that made them a household name. They’re about to embark on what’s shaping up to be their biggest world tour yet, taking in headline shows and festivals globally, and debuting new tracks from their upcoming record, as well as playing classics to the delight of their global fan base.
