Material – Memory Serves (1982) 320

* American experimental punk-jazz-funk-noise-electro band, founded circa 1978/79 by bassist Bill Laswell and keyboard player Michael Beinhorn.

Material was not only a band name, but an alias for the intensive production work of the duo (for Afrika Bambaataa, Herbie Hancock, Nona Hendryx ...).

Michael Beinhorn left the 'band' in 1985. In the 90s, Material became more world/indian/afro/ambient/dub-oriented. *

2025 - Keznamdi - BLXXD & FYAH

2025 - Kennedi - BLXXD & FYAH (Flac)

Angelic, almost hypnotic, Kelissa’s tender chants draw us into the captivating sonic universe of her brother Keznamdi and his second album Blxxd & Fyah. Following his highly acclaimed debut Bloodline in 2020, the Kingstonian singer returns this summer with a powerful new body of work comprising 13 compelling track that impress both musically and lyrically.

The monumental opening track, aptly titled I Am, delves into the “omnipotent-ness of the word God“and takes listeners on an evocative journey through human history – from ancient Egypt and the crucifixion of Jesus to our own personal origin stories, starting with birth and cutting the cord. Delicate flute melodies and a plaintive violin create goosebumps, before the rising choir adds emotional dynamic.

The mystically African-inspired soundscape seamlessly transitions into a quote by Dr. Arikana Chihombori Quao, a medical doctor and acitivist, as she speaks on the shocking “pact for the continuation of colonization in Africa”. She is not the only one given voice through original recordings: Keznamdi also includes a passionate excerpt from a speech by his father Errol “Chakula” McDonald – a singer, musician and devoted member of the Rastafari community himself – urging unity and “to come together as an executive body and identify what we want to do.” These original recordings are as moving as they are motivating.

Keznamdi’s lyrics, too, are rich with historical references about Paul Bogle and the Morant Bay Rebellion or Marcus Garvey; they offer sharp critiques of political and social developments, while also delving into personal and emotional themes of gratitude, appreciation, love, and spirituality. Pressure addresses the economic burdens caused by minimum wage, rising prices, and resource scarcity, highlighting a political landscape more consumed with itself than with the struggles of the people. Identity Crisis tackles the dangers of new media, where an entire generation, “glued to the screens”, risks sacrificing truth in the pursuit of likes and views.

Keznamdi, describing himself as a songwriter, largely self-produced the album, with select tracks co-produced by VAS Productions, Major Seven, and keyboardist Llamar “Riff Raff” Brown. Besides his sister Kelissa, guest features by Masicka, Mavado, and Marlon Asher enrich the album with precisely calibrated and beautifully harmonious performances. A vibrant and spirited cover of Toots Hibbert’s Pomps and Pride is a radiant highlight.

In the track list each song is thoughtfully placed, contributing to a layered narrative centered on the theme of Colonial Bondage. Musically, the artist remains rooted in his Jamaican Reggae heritage while skillfully blending classic elements like the drumming with fresh textures and compelling beats, resulting in a contemporary and modern sound. With Blxxd & Fyah, Keznamdi created a holistic and truly accomplished body of work that is both thematically profound and musically diverse.

Skafandros Orkestra

Train To Skavilla

(2013)

Skafandros Orkestra mixes the balance of Jamaican ska with Afro-Brazilian music, in a rich and vibrant instrumental. The group seeks, in its authorial repertoire, a dialogue with Brazilian rhythms, such as ijexá, jongo, frevo, coco and baião. In addition to his compositions, the Skafandros Orkestra show also features re-readings by great Brazilian composers, combining Jamaican ska with the Bahian universe of Dorival Caymmi, the modern orchestrations of Moacir Santos and Villa-Lobos's erudite world. This Brazil-Jamaica connection, combined with a powerful harmonical and orchestral structure, is what defines Skafandros Orkestra as a unique and unmistakable group in the panorama of instrumental ska.

Weather Report - 1977 - Heavy Weather (Expanded Edition)

Weather Report - 1977 - Heavy Weather (Expanded Edition) @320

Heavy Weather is the seventh album by Weather Report, released in 1977 through Columbia Records. The release sold about 500,000 copies; it would prove to be the band's most commercially successful album and one of the best sellers in the Columbia jazz catalog. DownBeat magazine gave Heavy Weather a 5-star review, and later its readers voted it jazz album of the year.

The lineup for the album consisted of Weather Report founders Joe Zawinul (keyboards, synthesizers) and Wayne Shorter (saxophone), alongside Jaco Pastorius (bass), Alex Acuña (drums), and Manolo Badrena (percussion). It was produced and orchestrated by Zawinul, with additional production by Shorter and Pastorius, and engineered by Ron Malo.

The album opens with "Birdland", which on its own became a significant commercial success, unusual for an instrumental composition, and would go on to become a jazz standard. The melody had been performed live by the band as part of "Dr Honoris Causa", which was from Joe Zawinul's eponymous solo album. "Teen Town", a Pastorius composition where his bass takes the lead instrument role, is often considered a highlight of the album and of Pastorius's career. "Rumba Mamá", a percussion and vocals feature for Manolo Badrena and Alex Acuña, was recorded live at a summer 1976 concert in Montreux, Switzerland, which was also the subject of a DVD released in 2007.

Dan Oppenheimer said in a June 1977 review for Rolling Stone that he felt the band had moved away from their earlier music, losing a lot of the space, melodies and airy feel that set them apart from other jazz-rock bands, but gaining a new bassist who "has been instrumental in developing their busier, talkative style", and that while their music previously "went up and up only, becoming more ethereal as it went, the new bottom makes all the difference in the world".

This is simply one of the best jazz albums ever. The line up collaboration is perfect.Joe Zawinul on keys, Wayne Shorter on sax, Alex Acuna drums, Manolo Badrena percussion and Jaco Pastorius whose brilliance on a fretless bass in the '70s is again captured timelessly. Each track has a journey of its own with these guys. Birdland (a jazz standard) and TeenTown are classics. The latter featuring a blistering fretless bass line as the lead instrument. The whole album is absolutely outstandingly executed and timeless. Unbeatable driving music. (Jazz Rock Fusion Guitar)
