Weird Al Yankovic - 1988 - Greatest Hits

Weird Al Yankovic - 1988 - Greatest Hits @ 320

Though 1989's Greatest Hits only covers the first half of "Weird Al" Yankovic's career, it features some of his best work, with classics such as "Eat It," "Fat," and "I Lost on Jeopardy" chief among its highlights. The collection takes a fairly even amount from each of Yankovic's early albums -- Weird Al Yankovic, In 3-D, Dare to Be Stupid, Polka Party!, and Even Worse -- gathering "Like a Surgeon," "Living With a Hernia," and "Ricky" in one place. The small, parody-heavy track-listing may disappoint die-hard Yankovic fans; indeed, some of his original work from In 3-D is better than a few of the parodies that wound up on the collection, and it seems that by 1989 Yankovic deserved to have at least a dozen songs on his greatest hits album. Regardless, Greatest Hits is still the a great introduction to his brand of musical humor. (AllMusic)

The Go-Betweens -1988 - 16 Lovers Lane

The Go-Betweens -1988 - 16 Lovers Lane @320

Arguably Australia's greatest pop group ever, The Go-Betweens seemed to save the best for last when they split in 1989. (They reunited in 1999, and have issued two more studio recordings since that time). 16 Lovers Lane is simply breathtaking; it is a deeply moving, aurally sensual collection of songs about relationships and the broken side of love that never lapses into cheap sentimentality or cynicism. Songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan had always been visionary when it came to charting personal and relational melancholy and heartbreak, but here, their resolve focused on charting the depths of the romantic's soul when it has been disillusioned or crestfallen, is simply and convincingly taut. While it's true that the group was going through its own version of a soap opera-styled romantic saga, that emotional quagmire seemingly fueled its energies and focus, resulting in an album so texturally rich, lyrically sharp, and musically honest, its effect is nothing less than searing on an any listener who doesn't have sawdust instead of blood in his or her veins.

Opening with McLennan's "Love Goes On," the stage is set for a kind of refined yet primal emotional transference that pop music is rarely capable of revealing. As he sings: "There are times when I want you/I want you so much I could bust/I know a thing about lovers/Lovers lie down in trust/The people next door they got problems/They got things they can't name/I know about things about lovers/ Lovers don't feel any shame/Late not night when the light's down low/The candle burns to the end/I know a thing about darkness/Darkness ain't my friend/Love goes on anyway," the doorway to the heart and its secrets opens. In the grain of his voice lie the flowers in the dustbin whose names are desperation and affirmation. With its hyperactive acoustic guitars, Amanda Brown's cooing string arrangements, and the deftly layered, subtly played brass instruments, the tune becomes a gauzy anthem; it celebrates the ravaged heart as a beacon of strained hope in the entryway to a hall of bewilderment. He follows it with "Quiet Heart," a song whose opening was admittedly influenced in structure by U2's "With Or Without You," but blows it away lyrically and with its subtly shifting melody and harmony between the guitars. Brown's multi-layered strings actually stride the backbeat's pulse. His protagonist speaks to an absent lover. His ache offers a view of his own weakness, desperation, and an all-consuming tenderness: "I tried to tell you/But I can only say when we're apart/How I miss your quiet, quiet heart."

Forster seems to underline McLennan' s raw emotionalism with his painterly, nearly baroque, "Love Is A Sign," where images from visual art, remembered scenarios, and real life brokenness intermingle effortlessly with the elegance of mandolins, a string orchestra, and a shimmering bassline. With "Streets Of Your Town," the Go-Betweens scored a minor hit in the U.K., and even got played on American radio for a moment, but despite the fact that it has the most memorable hook on a record filled with them, it merely underscores how constant the quality is on the record. Evidenced further by "The Devil's Eye," and the shattering closer "Dive For Your Memory," 16 Lovers Lane is melancholy and somber in theme, but gloriously and romantically presented. Despite the fact that band has but a cult following, even in the 21st century, the Go-Betweens have nonetheless given us a far more literate, magnificently written, performed, and produced slab of pop classicism, than Fleetwood Mac's wonderfully coked out, love as co-dependency fest, Rumours. Re - Up's of dead links on Vibes (Site News) (update in red 11.8.2025) Re posted 16.9.2025.

Please would all visitors to Vibes please take the time to read this, many thanks !!

* This post was first posted in August 2025, but it seems people read what they want and take no notice, this is why I have re posted it again today. I will add a text post to the right side of the site, when I have the time about Re Up's. *

* A few days ago someone requested a re up of the second cd in a two cd set, there was no name, the comment was anonymous. Anyway I looked at the post and saw it was not my post, but another member of the Vibes team (who is temporally without access to a working computer). So I checked my folder and didn't have a copy, I know another team member downloaded a copy, but as they are away on vacations at the moment, didn't want to ask them to upload it.

Well it turned out I had a 320 version, the original post was in 256. So I uploaded it, but spent my time looking for it and uploading it and then sharing it on the post. And who ever request it, has not even downloaded it!! Why do people do this? Please don't request a re up, if you have no plans to return and collect a copy. Well the link will stay on the post until Monday, if nobody returns, the new link will be deleted from the post and it won't be added again, unless it requested by someone who makes many comments here and adds a name to their comments or it's someone I know!! And they were getting an upgrade from 256 to 320, go figure.

Well I deleted the new link yesterday, was just a total waste of my time!!

Each member is responsible to re up the links for their posts, and as that team member, is unable to do it at this time, I thought I would try to sort it, just for someone not to collect it! Can't have wanted it very badly, or just messing about, who knows!

I have no problem sharing another link for any thing I have shared on Vibes, apart from the Flac I share here, but I have had a rethink about that as well, if someone I know or someone who adds a name to their comments (and has made many comments here) Then I will send them a copy, if they add their email address in the comment, which we won't publish, I will upload it and email them a new link, but the link won't be published on the post. I only keep Flac files of Reggae or Soul, any other genre is converted into 320 and I keep that.

We have also been getting a few nasty comments submitted to the site once again, but as all comments have to be approved, they don't appear unless I publish them, I was thinking about changing it back to automatic posting, but the system works and stops the internet idiots from posting shite in the comments.

One thing is would be great if your posting an anonymous comment if you could be so kind to add a name or nickname to the comment, then we have an idea who we are getting the comment from and if you require a Flac update it could mean the difference between you getting a copy via email or not *

* Well have been thinking about the whole re up of albums I share, other Vibes team members are free to do their own thing, either re up or not. But I feel three months is long enough to collect something that has been shared in 320 or Flac. To that end in the future I will not re up any of my posts in  Flac or 320. But if I know you or you comment regularly on the site (with a name on your comment), then drop a comment in on the post in question together with your email address (which won't be published on the site) and I will email you a new download link. This offer as I say is only for people I know or regular commentors, who add a name to  their comments. Or you can request a re up via an email to the site email, which is on the "About This Site", top post on the right. *

 * 4vibessite(at)proton.me is the Vibes email address just remove (at) and add @. Posting it as we do, it stops spam!! *
