VA - DJ Derek Presents Sweet Memory Sounds (2006) @320

DJ Derek (b.18 December 1941, Bristol, England - d.July 2015) was an English DJ based in Bristol. In a DJ career that spanned over 40 years, he was known for playing a blend of 1960's rocksteady, reggae, ska, dancehall and soul music. Arguably he is most famously for his patois-talking over the top of the music he played. He was also a drummer in Bristol bands Dave Rivers & The Ramrods and later with Burlington Bertie's Banjo Band in the late 50's and early 60's.

Before getting into DJing his work included being an accountant at Fry's Chocolate before being made redundant. When he was made redundant in his mid-30's, rather than leave his home city, he stayed and a friend asked if he would DJ at a local pub in the St. Paul's area of Bristol. In 1994 a BBC documentary about his involvement with the black community of Bristol was screened. He was approached by many festivals afterwards, including Glastonbury and Womad amongst many others, to DJ there and he became wider known as a result.

He was reported missing by his family in July 2015, just over a year after he had officially retired and only a few months after his last ever set, and his remains were found on 10 March 2016. He was laid to rest in April 2016 in his home city of Bristol. Since his death he has had a beer named after him, first poured in his favourite branch of Wetherspoons in Central Bristol, and many murals and paintings are visible around the city in tribute to him. Friends Don Letts (from Big Audio Dynamite plus also regular BBC DJ) and Daddy G (from Massive Attack) were working on a documentary film about him just before he disappeared. They halted production out of respect until his whereabouts were known. What footage they had was screened at the BBC 6Music festival in Bristol in February 2016.

The BBC Documentary from 1994 above which is an interesting watch.

PJ Harvey – Dry + Demonstration (1992) @320

"Dry" is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter and musician PJ Harvey (at this point a band also called "PJ Harvey"), released on Too Pure Records on 30 March 1992. The album was recorded at The Icehouse, a local studio in Yeovil, United Kingdom from September to December 1991. The first 5000 LPs and first 1000 CDs included demo versions of the album's tracks. The album was subsequently released in the United States on Indigo Records in 1992.

So will share this in two parts, CD1 the album and CD2 the demos, then you can take either or both, I still have my vinyl copy of this in mint condition, played once to record to cassette and then just played the cassette, later on got a digital copy. Shared a few copies of the said cassette with m8's as you did back in the day!!

I never plan what I am going to post, it's just whatever the mood takes, me, have a folder on the laptop with some possible share in, but I could select anything really, sometimes, like with The Real People I decided to work through what I had of their discography. I like on Vibes I can jump from one style of music to another, very easily, I have very broad tastes and am always looking for something new either new (just released or new to me).

Tom Petty - 2018 - An American Treasure (Deluxe)

Tom Petty - 2018 - An American Treasure (Deluxe) @320

An American Treasure, the first posthumous Tom Petty project, is designed as an aural biography of the late rocker, telling a tale that begins with a Mudcrutch session from 1974, running through the glory of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in 1976, and concluding with a live version of "Hungry No More" from 2016, just over a year prior to his tragic 2017 passing. Arriving roughly a year after Petty's death, the timing for An American Treasure makes sense -- he certainly deserved a tribute -- but in strict discographical terms, there didn't seem to be a need for a second career-spanning box set, as he already had 1995's rarity-laden box Playback and a multi-disc The Live Anthology from 2009. Happily, An American Treasure offers a story that's not told on either previous set, and that's a complete picture of Petty's career, told entirely through byways, not highways. The compilers -- a team consisting of his widow Dana, daughter Adria, bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, plus longtime producer Ryan Ulyate -- made a conscious decision not to replicate any material from Playback, which meant that there wasn't room for the original hit versions of any of Petty's hits. Ultimately, this meant that many of his best-known songs are nowhere to be found on An American Treasure, but that winds up as a feature, not a bug. In the absence of "American Girl," "Refugee," "The Waiting," and "Free Falling," the spotlight shifts to the remarkable consistency of Tom Petty's catalog, which is represented through deep cuts, alternate takes, live versions, and unheard songs. Upon first glance at the track listing, it may seem like there's not a treasure trove of unheard material, but as An American Treasure plays, what becomes clear is that the bigger picture counts more than the individual details. Not that the box doesn't serve up some unexpected surprises from all eras: an alternate "Rebels" has a muscle lacking on the original version, Echo generates two fine rarities in "Gainesville" and "I Don't Belong," the plaintive outtake "Don't Fade on Me" could've fit onto Wildflowers with no problem. It's fun to cherry-pick these tracks, but An American Treasure carries a greater resonance by demonstrating how Petty kept growing through the years, not only as a songwriter but a performer; some of the best moments are hearing him sing older songs later in his career. The trick An American Treasure pulls off is weaving these latter-day performances into the place where the songs were originally written, so this not only provides a narrative but also gives a sense of continuity, which is a rare thing in a decades-spanning box like this. As such, this box winds up as a fitting tribute to a rocker whose touch was so casual, he could be easy to take for granted, but when his work is looked at as a whole, he seems like a giant. 1985 - Prison Oval Rock - 40th Anniversary Edition (2025)

1985 - Prison Oval Rock -
40th Anniversary Edition (2025) (Flac)

VP Records is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Barrington Levy’s iconic album “Prison Oval Rock” with a special expanded edition, set for release today, on January 31, 2025. Originally released in 1985 on Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes’ Jah Guidance imprint, the album was a defining moment in Levy’s career, capturing the raw energy of the dancehall scene.

The title track, “Prison Oval Rock,” was born from an unforgettable night in Spanish Town, where Levy recorded an exclusive dubplate for Volcano Sound, one of Jamaica’s top sound systems. The song became an instant anthem, later inspiring Chronixx’s 2016 hit “Spanish Town Rocking.” That legendary dance saw prisoners dancing on the roof of the Spanish Town Adult Correctional Centre, lighting up newspapers while Levy’s voice echoed through the night.

This 40th Anniversary Edition dives deep into the archives, featuring thirty-nine tracks, including remastered versions, alternate mixes, dubs, and edits. As always, Levy’s unmistakable voice is backed by the legendary Roots Radics, with production handled by Junjo Lawes and recordings done at Channel One.

Barrington Levy’s influence spans generations, from his early days in 1979 to becoming one of the few dancehall vocalists with enduring global success. His ability to bring the live energy of dancehall to record has cemented his status as one of Jamaica’s most revered voices. With this anniversary release, VP Records pays tribute to an album that continues to resonate in reggae history. (WorldAReggae)
